1990 merc 115 lower unit

I am about to replace the water pump impeller on my 1990 merc 115, I am just looking for information on how to disconnect the shift rod (it seems to be a spline) does it just slide apart?
Any other tips/tricks to doing this?

You can look under Gear Housing for the LU removal and yes, the splines should just separate.
