Hello all, I am new to the ownership of a boat but not of boating. I recently purchased a VIP vision with a 4.3 chevy. After the first day out it wouldnt run more than 25mph due to points and condenser. I replaced that and the third time out I did what I was told was a redneck timing(turned the distributor while the boat was under load until it ran good. To my suprise it woke up and finally ran really good. After about 5 hours on the lake swimming and skiing the motor started losing power and so I shut it down and inspected. There was water in the oil.:(:(:(. I tried to get it back to the ramp but it died and locked up. The motor would not spin with the starter(acted like a dead battery). After a tow back by the water patrol I get it home and decided to get the oil out ASAP. I drained the oil, filter, and removed everything down to the block. one of the bigger water jackets on the head gasket with two pin holes in it was blown out. I was cleaning the block off so it would be ready when the heads get back from the shop and noticed there are cracks on both banks. I guess I need to replace the whole darn thing. I am wondering if I get a 4.3 chevy car block would all the guts from mine fit and work. If the block cracked then do you think the cam, crank, ect were damaged also(what are the odds). After I saw the cracks I figured I would try to spin the motor and I couldn't get it to spin. Also I am in the Kansas City area and looking for a place to get parts and also possibly a service tech. I have read the omc is ok as long as it is cared for. I ordered a OMC factory service manual off ebay but it is not here yet. Thanks for your time and sorry for this long post.

Lots of people ask about the car block, but it's just a pain in the butt. Contact Rapido Marine, get out the credit card, get a replacement that's ready to go, and winterize properly next time!

Making timing changes while on the water is bad. Get your engine properly tuned up and running before you hit the water and you'll be able to enjoy your time out vs. spend it panicking and calling for a tow.

At minimum, run the engine on muffs before you leave each time. 10 minutes can save hours.

Good luck, and welcome to iBoats!

I did run it on the muffs all three times before we went out(mainly because of the batteries). When you said winterize properly next time, I just bought the boat two weeks ago. Do you think the added stress of the engine running right could have cracked the block? Also I am not too familiar with how a timing light works(finding tdc and making sure it is on the compression stroke). I am sure the manual will clear some of it up for me. Could I have done damage with my redneck timing? As for the vortec, That would be great. Isnt there something that wouldnt work with mine out of the box? I have points and condenser. Would the esa still work?

If the machine shop checks out the heads then could I use those on a vortec. What about the exhaust manifolds(are these called water headers?).
