Purchased a 20 foot monterey about 2 months ago. was going to sell my t car and pick up a used truck. My t car has air ride on the rear and a 5000lb tow capacity. I installed a class IV hitch, power steering cooler, oil cooler, trans cooler. The boat weighs about 2800 plus the trailor. I hooked up the rig and pulled it to the lake and back twice back to back. After the trip checked over the engine and no problems or bad smells. The trailor does have hyd surge brakes. Only time you feel the weight is from a dead start or pulling steep hill. The trailor has a real long neck on it wich works out great at the ramp. The car can stay out of the water. I am planning to tow soon on a 140 mile trip one way on the interstate. My Question is will I be legal? I am below the tow limit of the car.

You are well under the towing limits of the car but you need to know the max gross weight of the car. On newer autos, there is a sticker inside the door frame of drivers. It will list the max weight. Add car, boat, trailer, gas, people and any cargo and there you have it. You will know.

go to a truck stop and weigh everything loaded with people fuel and gear like you were heading out on your trip and compare that to your gvwr. im willing to bet that 2800 lbs is dry weight and dosent account for fuel or even oil in the engine or any gear, also a trailer on an 20ft boat could weigh 1000-1500 lbs or the people in the vehicle or the cooler full of beer, im sure if you go across a scale at a truck stop you will be surprised.

you are fine, just do not run in overdrive, run in standard drive.
