1991 120 hp port side getting hot !!!

Just got the motor recently,Starts up great! but noticed after about 1 minute the port side cylinder head is noticably hotter to the touch than the starboard side the telltale is pissing water fine<br />I disconeected the hose that connects both thermostats housing and shot water through both ends<br />the starboard side water flows to the pee hole fine <br />the ports side there is backpressure and no water flow to the pee hole <br />so i swiched what i think are the thermostats to different sides and it is still the same no water flow from the port side so i assume it is not the thermostats. I am wondering what my next step should be

Check the thermostat seats. Remove both thermostats, and see if the temperature evens out. Ckeck both thermostats in a pan of hot water. Certainly! Don't leave the thermostats out.

Thanks,so you are saying take both thermostats out and run it for a couple of minutes to make sure the port side is not hot,those thermostats look like they are plasic put them in a pan heat the water up and make sure they open is this correct

the t-stats on that moptor are part of the pressure control, it may be one side is stuck open, that motor should idle about 150-160*.at idle it uses water pressure to hold the diaphrams down to keep the stat seated, when the water control valve opes,its connected to the advance lever, it allows the stats to move off the seats as needed.<br /> not only does that engine need lots of water pressure if you dont have the stats it runs nasty and its possible to fry the water cooled regulator.

JUst shot water thriugh every hose i could find,started it up again and seems like the port side is still a little hotter ,Rodbolt you say temp. is around 150-160 at idle? when i put my hand on the cylinder head i go to a count of about three before it get's uncomfortable ,but not extremly !! hot,so i should'nt run it without the thermostats ,i am going to take off the lower unit to see what it looks like in there,i will keep you informed thanks for your advice

Starboard side is normally a bit hotter.If port side is hot,starboard is probably TOO hot.<br /><br />DHP

well guys this is getting worse,tried to take off lower unit this afternoon,mind you i have taken a few lower units out before so i know not to try and pry it out.Butas i was taking the last bolt out the housing above the lower unit cracks ,Right where those square covers with the 4 bolts are. The crack starts about 4 inches to the back of the cover all the way to the bottom of the cover.Note: the lower unit is fine,WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE ? going to go out and buy a 12 pack and i will read your replys in the morning

Don't think it's non-repairable caldog....a good tieg welder could fix it for you. My question is how the heck do ya' get a crack there? Ain't been hit or bumped hard against anything has it? Did it just open up while you were removing the lower unit?

Well guys ,could'nt wait for the morning to read the reply's,yes OBJ.I got the bolts off surprisingly easy with the exception of the larger one which is in the back near the trim tab that one had a 5/8 bolt head,I backed that one out till i had about a 1/2 of clearence then proceded to loosen the other's as i loosened the the last one port side front bolt it just cracked i will try to post a picture tommorow. what are those square cover with 4 bolts ? exaust?
