1991-70hp rude 70tleie
After a night of fishing while pulling up at the dock this morning after about a 15 mile run up the mississippi river, I noticed steam coming out of the upper exhaust holes. It was still peeing. I took off the hood and it did not seem to be over heating. Before I order a head gasket am I correct to assume that is the problem? I also had another problem it would bog down at high speed, pump the bulb and it would go good for a while and then bog down again. I assume "fuel pump" so I am ordering a kit. Am I correct to assume these problems are not related?

That's one of the series of engines covered in service bulletins that required changes to the tell-tale to keep air out if the cooling system. Click the thumbnail, please.

You may also want to check the thermostat seat for signs of corrosion.

BTW, if you have a factory manual for that engine, could you look in the powerhead section and see what the temperature range is for the switch; it will be listed under Temperature switch test.

Ezeke I hope this is what you are looking for "

"wire color tan blue" switch closed switch open
240+-6 f 207+- 15 f
114+-4 f 110+-7f

Let me know if thats what you wanted or need any more information from that manual. I; going to check out that service link you sent, thanks

That didn't print out like I typed it. Switch closed are the numbers on the left.

That's what I needed to know. Some of the three cylinder motors were equiped with the 584166 temp switches which close higher than normal. That was because the 203 degree switches set off S.L.O.W. and were a problem in water over 70 degrees.

Because of that switch you could have water boiling in the cooling system without setting off the warning horn or S.L.O.W.

You may need to add a temperature gauge if you want to monitor the cooling system.

I put a new thermostat in it last week and I don't remember any corrosion. I guess I can look again. Your advice is to redo the tell tale and see if it fixes it?

I just thought of something else. When I bought this motor it had no thermostat so I guess the previous owner had a over heating problem too.

Right.

As far as the tell tale, at a minimum, re-route the hose to the top of the engine and then down to help keep the air out of the cooling system. There is a lot of chatter on this forum about the problem.

I will drill a new tell tale tomorrow. Do you have a pic of where exactly to do it as there was not one in the diagrahm?

I don't think you have to redrill the tell-tale, just take a longer hose and run it over the top of the block, will keep the block full of water.

Re: 1991-70hp rude, steam comming from exhaust

Update, yesterday I installed a new impeller as I hadn't done that yet. I have only had this motor about a month and am still getting the bugs out. The old impeller looked fine but I changed it anyway. Today I relocated my tell tale as per service bulletin that Ezeke sent me. Every thing is working like it should. I am waiting for my fuel pump kit then i will take it to the river and let you guys know how it's doing. Once more, thanks a lot.

Re: 1991-70hp rude, steam comming from exhaust

Took the boat out yesterday for a long ride. The new placement of the tale seems to have fixed the steam comming out of the exhaust holes. As I said I was surging at wot. I rebuilt my fuel pump and it helped some but it is still doing it past about 4500 rmp. I tried two gas tanks and hoses. I may look at the small lines going to the carbs but right now I am heading towards the river. Could my float levels make it surge?
