ok here is the deal - had the boat last year and had this problem all last season, they put a impeller in it and said fixed...but it wasnt.... we atart up the boat and run it say 10 minutes,,,it starts to overheat and will do so if we dont:
got out of no wake and open it up- then it goes up and comes back to 140 or
I bipass the drive and "rev" the motor up till it rises and then drops again.

it will pretty much be fine the rest of the day unless we sit out for a long time on the water and start over from the top!

what thoughts are there? my thoughts are that it needs extrnal water pump but i dont want to throw needless money at it with out some advice/direction

thanks for looking and blessings!

Replace the thermostat, your old one may be sticking.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OUT on the water yesterday and overheating BIG TIME! brought it in and tore the seats out of the back and started into the system, took out the impeller and found it to have a fin missing, went over to the marina and bought one for a chrysler..had to do some machining but it will fit!

BUT there is a down tube on the raw water pump where this impeller was and I noticed there was a iece of the impller in it. So i decided to remove the hose leading under the motor and found there is a metal stop screen where the hose connects and it was FULL of old impeller pieces from over the years Like so full I collected enough pieces to make another inpeller!

So I jumped the marina today that had "worked" on the boat asking why they never looked at this screen and they told me they did not know of another boat that has this "screen" set up- i think that was crap but i am not a pro either....

SO NOW THE BOAT RUNS 120 DEGREES ALL THE TIME AND NOT 220 LIKE IT WAS- PRAISE GOD!

I am dealing with similar issue...90 ebbtide 200ss w/ v6 yammie stern runs and constantly cuts itself back to exactly 2400 rpms...can throttle back to N and hit again will run up to 4400 rpm but in 2 or maybe up to 25 mins or anywhere in btwn in cuts smoothly back to 2400 rpm...been told is a sensor in computer logic from yamaha, but no clue how to diagnose which...I think is getting hot and this impeller issue maybe clogged up my screens...is that 2400 rpm anything anyone can confirm to a safe mode??

My 92 ebbtide with Yamaha inboard/out is doing the exact same thing. It refuses to pump water / begins overheating until I am up on plane. Like I need to prime the pump or something. It then works perfectly until I turn the engine off...and must get back up on plane again in order for it to cool. I have had several mechanics look at it/the impeller/etc...none have figured it out. Not sure if any have checked the hose screen...but I guess it is worth a look. (can I get at it in with the boat in the water? where is it?. Any/all suggestions welcome....I believe this is a known issue that all early 90's ebbtide owners with Yamaha's face...some sort of defect.

Yes...u can get to it from on the boat...I removed the back seat and follow the hose coming off the raw water pump down under the motor to where the hose connects to I remember a collar...that is where the screen is located....good luck...your marina probably did not check it... In my opinion....they have not been as smart as I gave them credit for. Another local marina that was a current ebbtide dealer did know exactly what I was talking bout tho!

Actually not a screen. Its the power steering oil cooler and the screen is the small tubes that flow water thru it.
