Me again, can someone guide me through changing a water pump (impella) on a 1991 Force 150hp ob.
I just got this engine and had to replace the electronics. It now runs really great but I'm getting a over heat temp alarm (I shut it down quick). I noticed that there is NO water expelled from the pee holes when it is running and I guess it would be a good idea to change the water pump before I head to any water with this monster. The shop Manual I have leaves everything to be desired! There really is no good pictures, or procedures as to where to start in changing the pump. One paragraph leads me to beleave that I can "service" the water pump without removing the lower unit...Hmm. That would be really nice if possible :D
I'd really apprecaite some patient assistance on this one. My only recourse is the dealership the engine was gotten from new, and THEY won't even answer the telephone half the time.

Help!
Thanks folks

Ken Zur

THE ONLY WAY TO REPLACE THE IMPELLER THAT I KNOW OF IS TO DROP THE LOWER UNIT.THE HARDEST JOB IS GETTING THE LOWER UNIT BACK UP. RAISE ENGINE REMOVE BOLTS ON LOWER UNIT REMEMBER THE ONE UNDER THE TAB. SCRIPE A LINE ON THE TAP TO REPLACE IT THE SAME WAY IT CAME OFF.REMOVE COTTER PIN FROM SHIFT ROD,THAT IT UNIT SHOULD DROP.JUST NOTE THE WAY THE FIN'S DIRECTION,REPLACE THE NEW IMPELLER THE SAME WAY.YOU CAN PUT SOME GREASE ON NEW IMPELLER SO YOU WON'T GET A DRY START UP. ALSO NOTE KEY WAY WHEN REMOVEING ON IMPELLER THAT IT YOUR DONE.YOU MAY HAVE TO DROP THE UNIT INTO GEAR SO THAT YOU CAN TURN THE PROP TO GET THE SHAFT SPLINE LINE UP. DON'T FORCE ANYTHING TOGETHER. :)

Oh Boy, Since I've never done this before I am a little apprehensive. I see the cotter pin on the linkage, I see a total of 6 bolts, 3 on each side of the lower unit. I can see the bolt under the tab. When the two units come apart, will the LU grease chamber be exposed? Should I drain the lower unit first?
Another question, can I enable HTML here? That way I can post a picture if need be.

Thanks again for the help.

Ken Zur

OOOps forgot to ask. How heavy is this lower unit? Are two people required to lower it? Three people? The manual suggests supporting it???? What does that mean? Just having someone hold it up while the other removes all the bolts. I'm just scared that I'll find all kind of springs pop out when I remove these bolts or it will fall to the ground and bust open..... ech!

Thanks again.
kz
