well I bought a 140hp johnson 1991 outboard from a friend a few years ago. He said the engine had been rebuilt a couple years before because the vro failed and it burned one piston. Well i didn't think about it at the time but he said instead of just re boring that one cylinder and replacing that one piston he had all of them bored out and replaced. Well that has me wondering what about the bottom end of the engine like connecting rods and crankshaft? He spent 2200 dollars on the rebuild so do you think they just re bored the engine and put new rings and pistons in or did they replace all the bearings, rods and crankshaft also? What would be the normal routine to this? I know I should just ask him but I don't really want to ask now after the sale. He did keep the original powerhead and had them do all the work to that. He didn't replace the engine.

Hmmm... That is really hard to say. To really know for sure you will HAVE to ask HIM though. Unless you wanna rip her apart and inspect. Sounds like you got yourself a good engine either way though. :D

Ole wifes tale... more likely a locating pin migrated and rings rolled in the port or water in the VRO tank.

So what do you think the shop did? Just do a top end rebuild where they rebore and hone the cylinders and then replace the pistons and rings and reused the connecting rods? The engine had 600hrs at the time. It has about 850 now.

To me if you're going to go through all the effort to go into the engine then wouldn't it make the most sense to just change out everything. Like bearings, connecting rods and then i'm not sure what they do with the crank. If they would replace that too.

You would think so anyways :)
