1991 Johnson 40hp rough idle and black oil leak after first use

I picked up this used motor last fall. Based on what I've read here (thanks everyone), I did the following:

- new water pump kit installed
- replaced lower gear oil
- new seals on the drain/fill plugs
- ran pre-mix and the VRO tank marked with tape to make sure it's being lubed
- added Sea Foam to the gas to de-carb the engine (and plan to add it all the time)

I had the boat out for the first time on Friday and it idled rough and would sometimes stall out at idle. It ran fine otherwise. I'm guessing the rough idle could be due to the excess oil? The VRO tank did show oil use, so I'll run straight gas next time out. Also, the engine controls came with the motor, but were disconnected. Perhaps the idle speed needs to be increased (take up on the knob on the end of the throttle cable at the engine side)? Perhaps I should run a tank of straight gas with VRO & see how she idles before making any adjustment to the idle.

Also, after parking and flushing the engine on muffs later that night I noticed a small puddle of black oil on the ground coming from the front of the prop. I didn't smell it, but it was quite gooey. From what I've read here this is probably 2-stroke oil and carbon from the exhaust. If so, it looks like this is ok? I plan to double-check the lower gear oil to make sure there is no water intrusion. I'm just trying to save myself from some unnecessary work but if the gear oil is ok, should I be safe running the motor again?

Thanks in advance. Moose

black goo perfectly normal, unburnt fuel oil, and carbon. decarb will clean it up. it sounds like you need a carb cleaning, especially low speed jet, and idle speed stop screw adjustment. also check your spark.

Thanks, I'll do that and report back on how it goes.
