1991 Johnson Runs Loud

is there any way to quieten this outboard, its is very loud in the foot. please dont laugh this is my first outboard and i want to do what ever it takes to prolong the life until i can afford an up to date one.

im not sure what this post means! is it tore up are the gears grinding? that outboard is not that out of date especaly if it has low hours on it many people have motors twice that age! Be more specific on model and the type of noise and when it occurs!

its a 200hp johnson, when i said loud i meant like if a car had a hole in its muffler, it runs louder than normal if that makes any sense to you. i hear some outboard start up beside me and you cant hear them running, but mine you can hear

You say its very loud in the foot?? When is the last time you changed the lower unit oil?? If it's just the motor in general, how is the foam holding up inside the cowl? Is there any left there at all? Also remember you do have a 200 horsie, shes not as quiet as a little 4.5,

Sorry, but I've got to ask - is the lower unit in the water or tilted up when you hear this noise?

'Laker i was thinking the same thing, may have the motor trimmed wrong! Are the motor that ar quieter than yours similar size and age. My 1981 johnny 60hp is a 2 stroker obviously but at idle is not very lod at all i think, but it cant compare to a 4 stroke where all you hear is valves taping! If i take off in front of you you will think i have a muffler compared to that 200hp!

some people drill hole for the exhaust in the lower units make sure everything in the lower unit look stock
