1991 Mariner 150 HP magnum II control box

There is a knob in front of the Control "Throttle Resistance." this may be a stupid question Lord knows I have a asked a few in my life. What's it purpose?

It puts tension on the lever and cable to you can let go and it maintain speed. Doesn't affect "stiffness", just holds it in place. Make sense?
