i am in the process of buying a boat with a 1991 merc 60 hp oil injected motor. original owner, used mainly for fishing. is this a good motor? are there anythings i should look for when i purchase the boat? i know the boat is solid, and cheap to replace, but motors run $6000.00 or better to buy new, so this is my big issue. i guess my biggest concern is if this year and hp was a quality motor, or if it has a reputation for repairs.
thanks to anyone who can help. i dont want to buy a money pit.

Re: 1991 merc 60hp- good or bad?

Both of those motors use alot of the same parts. I've got an 88' 60hp that i bought but later found out it has a blown piston. One of the problems i found is there alot of parts that are no longer available due to the age. Merc just stops making parts after a certain time frame. It seems like there are not alot of these motors around but from what i've heard, if you can find one that's in good shape, they're pretty good motors. I've also heard that alot of people don't run the oil injector system and just use a 50:1 pre mix because the injectors have a tendency to foul up. Good luck....

prolly both good engines but i would at least do a compreesion check on either one the compression should be 100 psi plus and all cylinders within 10% of each other. and check the condtion of the engine overall wiring does the water pump work does it run good, etc. compression is the main thing if uve the good compression and the engines runs ull prolly be fine with either one
