First time posting and I’m not quite at wits end but pretty close.
So long story short I pick up a boat at a bargain. It was sold under the terms that that motor wasn’t running properly as I’m pretty mechanically inclined but this is my first outboard. I’ve been over it multiple times and many a times on the water with it dying and putting it on the trailer with the kicker I’ve finally been able to put it on the trailer with the big motor the last 2 times out. The throttle linkage was all messed with. The carbs were set wrong and 2 of the old coils were broken. It will run and idle fine now, however, when I time it I can get it perfect in the low rpm range but when I go to set the advance it seems to have a gap somewhere between 25-30 degrees where the spark stops and the timing light won’t activate. In the water if I have the advance set to approximately where it should be it will have a bunch of power then once the engine revs up it instantly dies like the ignition was shut off. The only way I can get it to run with out a problem is if I have the timing backed off to around 23-24 degrees but I lack power and Im not getting full RPM. Any thoughts on where to go from here?
I’ve checked the stator, trigger and switch box and they all seem to be fine as per the service manual but I’m wondering if it still might be a problem with one of them once the engine revs up. Ive also been through all connections and they are tight and I don’t think there is a problem there.

Thanks for the help guys and gals,

Engine info is:
1991 Merc 40hp 4 cylinder 2 stroke ELPTO 0D011765

Potential problem solved. Upon further inspection of the trigger I was able to make it ground out during the resistance test. I proceeded to remove the fly wheel and it turns out the insulation on the trigger was worn away and had exposed the purple wire causing it to ground out in certain positions. I’m just waiting on the battery to charge up to time it correctly and then give it a shot to see if it works.
