Re: 1991 WellCraft trim won't work

Does your trim pump have 2 or 3 wires leading to it? It'll either have 3 if the system uses solenoids or 2 if it uses relays. Did it just up and quit? Or, was it intermittant before it finally failed?
A little probing with a test light might point out the problem. It's a lot like detective work. The 3 wire setup with solenoids are easy to diagnose with a test light. Most likely you've got a bad connection somewhere. The 2 wire systems using relays are a little more tricky. Checking each relay for continuity is the first step. Look for corroded connections and broken wires. Does your trim system have a beach override? If so it'll have a third relay under the dash that's another possible point of failure. And then there's always the trim switch which can be a little flakey.
We had similar problems with our 92 Excel 20SL which was made by Wellcraft so I'm assuming the assemblies are similar. Our problem was narrowed down to corroded connections. It appears that either the mfgr or a previous owner wired the system with cheap automotive crimp on connectors not proper marine tinned type. I replaced them all with marine grade and shrink wrapped all the connections. No more problems.
You can find owners manuals for your particular VP engine/drive combo here....

They may contain wiring diagrams for your particular setup which help tracing/diagnosing problems.
Good luck. Let us know how you make out. Holler if you need help.
