Long story short i boat a boat and was given a motor.
I was told it was ran fine and was fogged the last time he ran it 5 years ago.
It is a 2 stroke yamaha 1991 225txrp.
I do not really know anything about the motor as its pretty much covered up for the winter.
Ive been doing some research and found that there is an issue with the gear shift rusting out but there is a 2 piece replacement availible so i would not have to remove the powerhead.
i am asking if there are any other common problems with these motors, that would make it not worth fixing.

thanks john

it should be a good motor. I hope the rust/corrosion is not too bad. I would check the compression first. after sitting up it may not be real high, but if you got one cylinder that is a lot lower than the others it could be a red flag. change gear case oil, water pump impeller, new correct plugs, test spark with spark gap tester, rebuild carbs, change fuel filter, test fuel pump. if everything checks out, hook up a gas line, pump the bulb and fire her up. those older yammys are great motors.
