1992, 150 Johnson will not start – No spark

Having problems starting – intermittently. Once it gets started it runs fine and will start right up on subsequent attempts. Compression looks good and initially the spark was present on all 6 plugs. Was driving me nuts for a while since I was thinking too much fuel was getting through and flooding the engine. Today I checked it again and there was no spark. The question is which is more likely to cause an intermittent condition the power pack or the stator? Any help would be appreciated.

Check your key switch first. Make sure its working properly and the safety kill circuit is working too.

checked the swith and it's ok - still need to check it at the powerpack to make sure it's not shorting out between the kill switch and ground. Thanks for the response - any other suggestions?

You can isolate the kill circuit by disconnecting the black with yellow stripe wire at the powerpack. If it then starts your problem is in the kill circuit. If it does start you will have to reconnect the wire to kill it. If still no spark then you need to start testing ignition components.

Thanks for the reply. I do not have the proper test equipment, so how do isolate the specific component with out buying new components (regulator, power pack, stator) one at a time?

OK checked the kill circuit at the power pack and still no spark. Is there any way the overheat sensor could be causing the no spark problem?

THanks in advance
