I boat the boat less then a year ago. The motor started no problem. I had it sitting, did some cutting underneath the console. My intention was to rid the console of old wires that were not used. Does the key ignition require power to start the motor?

unplug the big red harness plug at the motor, and jump the starter solenoid. you will have to flood the motor or pull the plug wires if it starts. with the harness connected, yes, you have to have the key.

Then the ignition switch will be wired as shown in the diagram.

The ignition switch just provides power to operate the starter and the primer solenoid, after that the engine runs on its own.

When the switch is turned to off, the switch crosses the two 'M' posts which grounds the powerpack so that it cannot fire.

Study the diagram; the circles at the bottom show what happens with each movement of the ignition key.

If the wiring is correct and you get no response from the engine, replace the 20 amp fuse in the holder near the starter solenoid.
