Hi All, I figure it's about time to replace my original '92 water pump on my 3 hp. OEM manual is on it's way but not here yet and I'm going stir crazy. The parts breakdown shows a shift rod with cotter pin. I see no access to this externally so I'm guessing I have to remove the power head to get to this. Am I correct? If this is the case I guess a new base gasket would be in order also. Any tricks to this changeout. Thanks, Ken

1992 3hp ? Doesn't the shift rod simply pull out from the lower unit leaving it still connected at the top?

Vic, I hope it's that easy. I loosened the two gearcase bolts and I could tell there was movement of the shift lever but I didn't really put much muscle into dropping it. The parts diagram shows a bushing and an o-ring at the bottom of the shift rod but I wasn't sure if it was threaded. Have you done this on yours? Thanks, Ken

I dont have a 3hp mines a 6hp. That has a retaining ring to keep the shift rod in the lower unit and it simply pulls out from the shift lever mechanism at the top. The 3hp is clearly different and as there is no retainer at the bottom I'd expect it to just pull out from there. It certainly wont pull out from the top. Pulled mine a part a couple of times but never needed a manual.

My luck the rod will be threaded at the bottom like my 50hp and I'll rip the threads out if I pull too hard. I did read on another thread about having to remove the power head but it was an older motor. I guess I can wait a week, my manual will be here by then. Thanks, Ken
