My cousin has a 1992 60 hp Johnson that will start, and run in neutral, but then stalls when they try to put it in gear. I sold her the boat almost two years ago so I'm tryin to help. The motor went into the shop for carb rebuilds and water pump repacement in April. When I picked up the boat, the mechanic told me he was really happy with how well it was running. They put the boat in the water last weekend and discovered the problem. Does anyone have ideas before I bring this back to the mechanic?

idle speed set too low. idle speed has to be fine tuned with the boat in the water, and in gear.

The mechanic tuned it in the water. On the phone he said maybe power pack? I replaced the power pack about four years ago. Isn't there a switch that interupts the ignition when shifting?

Re: 1992 60 hp Johnson Stalling

Figured I would post what I found. There is a plastic part behind the throttle lever that holds the throttle end of the shifter cable sleeve. The plastic part was broken, which left the whole sleeve/cable assembly free to move when the throttle was being actuated. Frist symptom was eratic(or no)shifting. With the cowl off, very limited visible shifter movement.

Also found two more issues after nailing that one down, but that was the first piece of the puzzel.

60hp does not have shift interrupter switch. that is on 6 and 8 cylinder motor.
