I currently have a 1992 90 HP Johnson Outboard. When I went to change the gear oil in the beginning of the season I noticed that it was a milky color. I recently performed a pressure test on the lower unit using 15 lbs of pressure. The first seal I checked was the bearing housing underneath the water pump. I was able to rock the main shaft (from powerhead to lower unit) a little bit and noticed that air was able to escape. This seems to be the source of the problem, but one concern I have is whether or not you should be able to move that shaft back and forth ? It doesnt have a lot of play, but it can be done. If this is normal, should I just replace the bearing housing under the water pump ? If there is more envolved, due to the rocking what exactly needs to be done ? Any help would greatly be appreciated
