I have a 1992 Evinrude 48 SPL. Had it rebuilt in 07 and it has less than two hours on it. I start it up and run it on the muffs every other week to keep it fresh. Recently when I turned on the key the alarm stayed on without starting the motor. I was able to turn the key off and back on a few times to make it go away. Now its constant from the moment the key is turned on to running the motor or not running the motor. I disconnected the temp wire at the motor and still get the alarm. My manual says this is the only sensor my motor has (or the only one it lists under alarms). Any ideas what might cause this?

Additionally I would like to get tilt and trim for this outboard. It currently has a tilt assist cylinder that is about kaput. What should I look for new or used? Part or model numbers?

Disconnect the TAN wire at the horn. If the sound continues, replace the horn.

If the sound stops, either the TAN wire is shorted at some point between the horn and (or at) the engine OR a sensor has failed at the engine. If you have a VRO setup, there will be a TAN sensor lead going to that unit also.

48 SPL does not have VRO. it is straight pump, premixed fuel.

That's why I said "if" Tash. Hard to tell how one might customize over the years. Thanks for the reminder though.

Re: 1992 Evinrude 48 SPL Constant Alarm/Trim Tilt Question

Here is what I have accomplished so far. Disconnected the tan wire going into the temp sensor - still get constant horn. Disconnected the tan wire from the horn - No horn. With the tan wire disconnected from the horn I just get the normal quick test beep. Re-connect the tan wire back to the horn - Constant horn.

So I've unplugged the large amphenol connector which of course stops the alarm. It also stops everything else from the control box. I'm in the process of checking continuity on all the wires but it doesnt appear to be the temp sensor.

I blew a fuse while testing continuity so Im off to get a replacement. Does anyone have the pin out for this connector so that I can pinpoint the offending wire/sensor/source of frustration?

Well after checking continuity on 100 different wires and all through the powerpack I felt the sting of defeat. Rather than wave the white flag I cracked open the control box for one more round. After opening the box....no more alarm. Best I can figure a wire was pinched, shorting on the housing, or corroded. I cleaned all connections, rerouted a few wires, and covered everything with electrical tape.

Checked the temp sensoy by grounding it to the block and it worked just fine.

One more boat problem down! 100 to go!
