I'm looking for info on this model year. Anyone out there have any comments? There is one for sale that I,m looking at, but i read that evinrude/johnson had quality control problems around this time period. I have a 1977 55hp johnson on my boat now, and it runs great, but does not have tilt and trim and this "new" one does so I'm considering taking a ride to look at it.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Mine runs great.

I bought it from a very reputable dealer, following what he described as a total rebuild. The VRO was removed by him, and I run premix with no problems.

I don't know whether VRO failure was the reason a total rebuild was necessary.

There is a service bulletin to re-route the tell-tale. I have not done that yet. I asked the dealer, he said he did not think it was necessary as long as I confirm the tell tale is working every time.

I've had it 3 reliable years, and performed only routine maintenance and winterization. I paid $2500., I know that seems steep, but I trust this dealer. I'm happy with the motor.

If you are referencing OMC Service Bulletin No. 2276,Rev.!, April 1994, you need to make the mod because "trapped air" in the cooling system will cause the motor to overheat. Check out the link below from the FAQ's.

Thanks for that.

In the notes you linked, it says something like, "if you don't want to drill, you should re-route the hose over the top of the block so that air cannot enter the system."

I just went and checked, and my hose is routed from the hole in the side of the jacket, up and over the block, and down the other side to the hole. Presumably, this means that the pump has to push water uphill and completely fill the jacket, so I should be OK.
