Hi all...again. I'm still looking for a new motor for my boat, it looks sad sitting there all naked. I am going to look at a 1996 48 Special soon but I had another guy email me with a 1992 rebuilt Johnson 40. He said it runs great except its noisy because the guy who rebuilt it forgot to put oil in the lower. Then he ran it dry. Sooo...is this even worth my time?

I know I need to check the lower now that there's oil in it to look for water or metal but if I don't find anything out of the ordinary, how much of a chance would I be taking? Is a lower rebuild easy for a novice?

Thanks,
Jake

If the lower unit was run dry I would assume it's toast and work on the deal from that point. I'd look for a new lower unit. And then if it turns out it does work to some extent then it's a bonus or you have it for parts.
