I have a 92 Johnson 60hp, J60TLENE, that has been running great. Yesterday went out to fish and motor started up fine, idled great, but once put in gear and revved past 1400 RPM it would die. Would rev up fine in Neutral, and run in gear under 1400RPM. Tried pumping the bulb while running and same thing, so I don't think it is the fuel pump. We are running the original VRO pump with the oil line disconnected, pre-mixing our fuel. Pulled cowl off the motor and noticed the timer advanced had disconnected, reconnected but same issue. Went and fished for an hour or so, idled back to the trailer, when loading on trailer revved it up in gear and it worked fine. So backed off the trailer, took it for a spin and acted like nothing was wrong, ran great.

Couple of things: Could it be an intermittent issue with the fuel pump, how do you test it? Also might just go ahead and replace this, but what part # should I get? It could have been a stuck float on the carb, that freed itself. The timer advanced had to play some role, but don't understand why it was still acting funny once reconnected.

Things done recently: Carbs rebuilt begining of season, new plugs, new water pump/housing installed 3 weeks ago, new CDI power pack 2 months ago.

Any thoughts, thanks
Tex

Use a timing light to verify its sparking on each cylinder.
Or do a spark test,...and not with a sparkplug.:p

Get the proper spark tester from autozone with adjustable gap, set gap to 3/8th inch.
