Hey all. I just picked up a fishing boat with a 92 Mariner Magnum 40 on it. No water getting through so took pump apart and the impeller was mangled. Had been sitting dry for quite some time i assume. I ordered the repair kit with new plates, gaskets and impeller. what didn't come with the new kit was the washers that apparently go on top and below the impeller. A couple videos i watched (similar engines) said to save the ones that were on it but that wasn't possible. An old merc/mariner service manual i looked at shows these washers. But when i go on mercury marine parts catalouge online it doesn't show them in the blow up view. Assuming these would be quite important. Does anyone have any insight on if they aren't needed with the sierra kit or what size the nylon washers are, and maybe i can get some from the auto parts store or online. I called a couple of the mercury dealers around here and if its not in the book they have no idea
Thanks so much in advance
Mike

I just rebuilt the pump on my '89 Mariner 25. I don't remember the washers as nylon -- they were what I would call shims, not washers, and were brownish... maybe fiber. They were thin, about the thickness of the recess in the impeller over the bronze boss on either side, which would make sense. They fit into that recess -- which would give you an idea of their diameter and thickness. Maybe someone else can give you more exact information.

I don't see them in the parts blow-up on the Crowley Marine site for your HP and year motor, either. You didn't say exactly what engine model you have, or exactly what engine you saw in the video which had washers/shims. And my '89 25hp water pump may be different than yours.

Since you didn't find any in your own engine on disassembly, now seems pretty likely to me it doesn't use them. Check further and make sure the OEM model diagram you are looking at shows no washers, and that's what you have.

Hey, yea well i just searched 92 mariner 40 service manual and it came up with one on Scribd that shows the washers. every video of older 40 mercs and force trackers had them, couldn't find anything specifically on the Mariner but on mercury marine.com parts catalog using my serial number they are not there. I am worried because the impeller that i took out which was the OEM had the rubber go right over the brass hub but the Sierra version that came in the rebuild kit indents back into the hub which would leave room for something to go in there. i have ordered the OEM impeller because after putting it back together I still have no water and the impeller is in the upper housing tighter then a nuns va jay jay. also noticing on my pump which is part number 77822A1 there is no seal or washer going from the pump to the water pipe from the top of the cap like it shows in diagram so may not be sealing enough to pull the water through?? i dunno. seemed very simple but its not working

Seal is necessary. Looks like Quicksilver 26-38452 and a washer that fits under it listed as 26-38453.

Also make sure pee hole fittings and rubber hose are clear of debris/mud wasp nests.
