I am looking at a 1994 OMC 19.5' Sea Nympth aluminum deck boat that is rated for a 120HP max outboard. The guy has a 1992 Merc black max 135 HP motor on it. Can any of you tell me the difference between a 120 HP and a 135HP merc? Are they both V6's? How about overall size and weight difference? Should I be concerned about more weight on the transom? Are these good / reliable motors? The boat seems to be very heavily constructed. I have seen much larger motors on much smaller boats. Especially on bass boats, so I don't think the extra HP will hurt. What do you guys think? Thanks so much, Dave

Re: 1992 merc 135 HP questions

Dave, It is hard to compare a 120HP max rating with a '92 135HPV6. A 115HP Merc is an inline four engine that is much lighter and less powerful than the 135HPV6. A 120HP Johnnyrude is a V4 which is much lighter and less powerful than a 135HP V6. See the issues.

I have a '93 135HPV6 on my 16' speed boat. It is about 400# and is one heck of a powerplant. Will it work safely on the deckboat? I do not know. What does your insurance company think of the match?

Re: 1992 merc 135 HP questions

Thank you for the info. After checking with the water patrol, I figured that I better pass on the boat. Water patrol said if caught, I would be fined and the boat would have to be removed imediately from the water. Not my idea of a fun boating day. dave
