New here and hoping to get some help and advice.I recently purchased my first boat /1992 Renken Seamaster with a 1992 Force 120 with it.But the previous owner put a 150 johnson long shaft on it and did not finish hooking up because he is moving.Bottom line is i got a good deal on everything and was wondering and thinking of putting the force back on.Both supposedly run but i just feel the 150 is to big and the force is a short shaft.Oppinions on the Force.I have been hearing a lot of different stories. Thanks for any advice John.

Force is not a Murcury neither is the Johnston. You need to move to a different forum section.

The Chrysler/Force motor line was bought by Mercury marine many years ago, but was a completely seperate line.

I will move this to the Force forum for you.

Boy! Those Murcury guys can get testy, can't they? Just because you have two good engines is no reason though. Ohhh! Does that sound like I don't care for Mercs?

Anyway---Even though I am a big Force fan, I still think you would be happier with the Johnson.

That aside, Force did not make any short shaft versions of the 120. They made a 20 inch one for 20 inch transoms and a 25 inch one for 25 inch transoms. To measure shaft length, you measure down from the top inside of the mounting clamps to the "Cavitation" plate.

Transoms are never exact measurements but vary from hull design to hull design.

SO: If your transom is 24, 25, or 26 inches high and the Johnson is a 25 inch shaft, then it will fit way better. If the transom height is somewhere close to 20 inches and the Force is a 20 inch shaft, then it will fit better and unless you want to buy a jackplate or build up the transom I would choose it over the Johnson.

BTW Don, you may not realize it but are quoting Murphy's paradox: (paraphrased) It is easier to do it the hard way.

The cavatation plate is located above the propeller and should be about level with the deepest part of the transom, back of boat, hince 20 or 25 inch transom.
