1992 OMC Outdrive Question

I currently own a 1992 OMC Cobra. During the winter in my haste to winterize the boat I removed a screw from the side of the outdrive (used to have a Cobra sticker over it) and the backing fell off into the outdrive. I believe this might be the water pump jacket plug or something to that effect. Anyway I have retreived the rectangular nut from inside the outdrive. Can anybody give me a tip on how this should be put back together? It doesn't look like the nut hold anything to the lower unit, it's just more of a plug of some type. Thanks.
