Do you have a serial number for your engine? Merc didn't use the EST distributor very often.

Hi don it's 0d715800 you helped me decide in another post which ignition Sys to choose its the electronic ignition which is self contained in the dizzy ordered it from trickett marine in uk you linked me to the one off Michigan motorz
I have set 8 degrees btdc with timing shunt but when remove the shunt it dosnt seem to make any differance
At wot 4200 rpm ish it's approximately 20.7 degrees would this be right?

You aren't getting enough advance for some reason.
Here is what a Volvo EST would be seeing.

Is this correct how I set up
Cranked enging to find compression stroke on no.1 put distributor in no1 is approx 2 o'clock if looking out towards back of boat? Or do I need #1 in a certain place ?
Installed plug leads in correct firing order ran to temperature set idle approx 650-700 rpm connected timing shunt with engine running and put timing gun to 8' then turned dizzy so line matches up with 0 on timing marks on block? Should this be correct but no rpm loss when I connect or disconnect timing shunt?

The EST is aftermarket, yes? The timing curve on the OEM system has a maximum advance of 22? +/-2? from 2200rpm and up. That does not include the initial timing, so add your 8? initial to that. If you are not getting that much advance, talk to the suppliers of the dissy.... If the engine if running correctly and there are no issues I would not expect the timing to change when you remove the shunt. It may also be that the EST needs the system shutdown and restarted to kick it back into 'normal' mode. What brand is the EST? I'll try find something about it and let you know.

Ok had more time to get some readings adjusted idle screw so idles approx 650/700 as was idling lower than thought, 8' at idle 19.3'@2000rpm and 22.3'@ 4000rpm @35/40knots and approx 45/47knots @5000rpm
are these readings ok or will this cause engine damage?
Ps the speed isn't important mainly the ignition timing
Thanks for the help
Anthony

Forgot to say all these are without the timing shunt tool

Set your timing at 12? BTDC with the shunt installed. After removing the shunt, you should see around 21? @ 600 rpm, 24? at 800 rpm and will be jumping around a lot (which is normal, that is why you have to use the shunt to set the timing, the shunt locks it so it doesn't move). Once you get up around 1600 rpm it should smooth out and be easier to read and change per my diagram above.
With the EST you DO NOT set the timing like the Thunderbolt system. They are different.

I have set the timing at 8' with timing shunt but even when I remove the shunt it still reads 8'? Will this be due to the timing not advancing at all? It runs great but worried of its wrong it wil do engine damage

Set it at 12 and see what happens.
I would guess there is a problem with the module.
