Hi guys,
Bought a "rebuilt" '93 70hp for $1200 last week. Mechanic says top cylinder was redone (piston, rod, bearings, rings, carbs rebuilt and impeller), but balanced and properly torqued with the other two cylinders. I hope I haven't been duped. I made the rookie mistake of not checking compression beforehand. Cranked great on the hose, shifted good, idled good.
Mounted and took to lake today. Cranked easily but did not want to idle in gear. Once going however, she blasts out of the hole and cruises nicely the way it should with no hesitation whatsoever. Ease off the throttle a bit back down to idle and she just does not want to stay there. A bit of a challenge while docking or trailering.
Has a bit of a tiny jitter at idle much like my old Merc used to. Got back home and surprise! The exact same compression as old Merc. 135-115-135. Seems a little suspect for a recent rebuild? However 1984 60hp Mercury ran well for many years at that compression, still is. I have read the middle cylinder can be troublesome on these blocks.
My questions are - Could the loaded idle problem relate to the off compression, or should I double check his carb work? (low speed jet). Idle revs seems good, but should I turn up a bit? (unfortunately no tach yet) Could it be something more insidious like a reed valve, but then again wouldn't that have surfaced at mid-high range which was awesome? Your knowledge appreciated,
Brad
