So just bought an old bayliner for a good deal. Ya I know "a good deal" usually costs more in the long run, but I'm used to buy old things, dumping a huge amount of money in them and then have them look new. Its a sickness. But I digress. Anyways, it is really hard to start the damn thing. We were starting in my shop just to check things out. To get it started I'd have to crank until the battery was almost flat and have the throttle advanced. Could really smell gas from the exhaust. When it did finally start it ran rough and lots of black smoke. Really rich it seems to me. Let it run for 5 min and it clears itself up and idles around 500/600 RPM in neutral. If its left to sit more than 20 min the process starts all over again. Now I bought a SELOC engine manual but they are just like Haynes manuals, which are just vague enough to be annoying. Anyways the manual says that if you see gas in the sight tube off the fuel pump to replace the fuel pump right away, but of course doesn't say why, and I can see fuel in the little sight tube. Can I buy a fuel pump rebuild kit? The boat is now in storage until the weather warms up but I thought I'd get my parts together sooner than later.

Just like Haynes... (They are both crap :D ) Look through some of the 3.0 threads and find a downloadable "manual" for your engine. Lots of guys have the links and maybe one of them will post up a link.

With fuel in the sight tube, yup, you need to replace the fuel pump as the diaphragm is ruptured. With a lot of raw fuel pumping into the engine, I could see it being hard to start. Fuel pump rebuild kits are hard to find, I couldn't find one when looking, but others have.

Have you done a tune-up on the engine, points, condenser, cap, rotor, plugs wires? Raw water pump impeller in the lower unit too. Also, if not familiar with I/O's, the engine needs to be winterized so the block and manifold don't crack due to freeze damage.

Way... sounds like you are right... you will need to tune that baby up.. plugs, dist cap, filters, boil that carb out too. God knows what condition the gas was in too.. if it's not treated you might have "phase separation" occurring... or just old gas!! You can buy a new fuel pump complete.. forget the diaprams, dont think you can get those for the pump you have.. install a water separating filter too.. like the Admiral said,, impeller? when last changed? if you wont know, replace it. Achris (member and contributor on this forum) from the land of down under, did some terrific video work on how to change impeller on your drive,, assuming it's an Alpha 1. The short of it,, probably gonna drop $500 min to get it running right. If you are truely "way far north", better wait till April.. drain all water out of that block, sounds like you have the 3.0 GM? me too.. two plugs.. right side rear of block, unscrew, drain all water out, above that is another plug on manifold, drain that also,, remove top water hose, probably not going to be any water left in it anway,,take air compressor and blow it out,,, remember.. "air does not freeze", if you want to put antifreeze in there, have at it, I would not waste the money..

We all belong to the "Hole in the water club", I believe. Wouldn't have it any other way!

yes, I'm well aware that this venture will require me to dump an obscene amount of money and time into it. I don't mind, if I don't spend it the wife and kids will!! These boat things are almost as bad as Helicopters.

Just to explain the site tube a little. It is there so that if the diaphragm ruptures the fuel goes into the carb instead of the oil or bilge. Boats use a lot of safety features to try to stop people from blowing themselves up. Make sure you always use marine parts for fuel and electrical. The last time I got my boat inspected the deputy told me a week before he saw an engine bay blow because the person used an auto alternator or starter.

Would a ruptured diaphragm cause long cranking starts and initial rough idle?

stop running the engine until you get the fuel pump replaced.

Just to add a quick note.... I am sure you already know it, but just in case: Are you supplying water to the outdrive during this time through some muffs?
