Hey guys, haven't posted in some time. Got a new rig, a guy I used to work for gave me his 1975 Grady White center console with a 1993 Mercury Black Max 175 hp on it. The price was one "I could not refuse", so let's just say all work done on this is in the plus. Will post pics soon. My first question is, what's up with these motors? I've fished on this boat plenty of times and the motor certainly has the "get up and go" it needs, but not all the time. Sometimes out of the hole it will jerk and sputter, then it's off to the races. Can anyone give me some general history and info on this engine? I know some of you merc guys really know your stuff. Any info appreciated.

look at the timing advance system . it should operate smoothly from idle to wide open with the throttle.
sometimes it sticks under the flywheel and dosent let the advance take place like it should

lync and sync if this is a carb motor...be sure there is a gap from roller to carb contact so the trigger starts to move prior to carbs opening up..This is your advance mechanism and the adjust is critical for smooth operation...

Re: 1993 Black Max 175

Larry;

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - (175 H.P. (1989 ))
Serial No: 0C165486 Model No: 1175422GD

Parts list for model 1175422GD:

175 H.P. (V-6) - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

Re your question about the trigger, you will see it as item 15 under FLYWHEEL/STARTER MOTOR in the parts list. It is located just under the stator, contained in the flywheel.

Damn you are the man! Thanks brother I will get to work and post results. For the record this it's my first merc I have owned, only had rudes and johnsons, and am kind of weary about it. Am I being paranoid?

Looks like I'm gonna need a solenoid or relay for my tilt trim motor...I jumped the terminals for the "down" solenoid, can anyone send me a link for one or a part number? Having a hard time finding it. Thanks a lot guys

Re: 1993 Black Max 175

Also wondering if I should buy another plastic cover for my carbs (part no. 67246T). The old one is cracked on the corner not sure how big of a deal this is. Would this be worth it at 45$?
