1993 Evinrude 140 HP Leg Leaking Water

I am looking to upgrade to a bigger sized boat. I found a guy who is willing to trade my boat with a little bit of $ for his 20 ft with a 140 HP Evinrude. Now everything is great on the boat, the motor runs and it pumps water and goes into gear well. Except there is water coming out of the leg where it's not supposed to. I am not too sure if I have the terms right but it's coming out of where the exaust housing meets the gearcase (the seam that is between the two). I have posted a picture of an evinrude motor and circled where it's coming out of just for reference. It's not the same motor but just so people get an idea of where it's leaking besides my verbal description. Would could be causing this? It seems like there is supposed to be some sort of gasket between the two that could be shot maybe? The owner said it just started doing this a couple weeks ago. I just want peoples opinions on what it could be before I jump into this thing. Any input would be HIGHLY appreciated. Please don't sugar coat anything it could possibly be since I want to know the worst case situation. On my other outboard (it's only a little 25 HP) it starts pissing water almost instantly.

Not normal, but probably not a major issue. The cooling system circulates pretty freely above the lower unit so water could typically squeeze out almost anywhere along that seam. Try tightening the lower unit bolts first. If that doesn't work, probably just needs a service and reinstall/reseal.

Had a similar problem on an 1985 Evinrude 120. It turned out a gasket was missing in the water pump assembly.

That parting line is not sealed or gasketed. If a salt motor and some corossion on the mating surfaces, leakage like you have is not uncommon, since water extends much higher in the midsection than the parting line. Not to worry.

I had an '85 140 and it took a while before water came out of the telltale. Again, perfectly normal.

Well this is the only issue with the motor. Do you guys think the trade is worth it? I only paid $700 for my boat and I would give him about $200. It's a really nice boat but that was my only worry. Is there anything I could do to stop this leakage? I think I am going to trade tomorrow if you guys think it's not anything bad. It runs pumps and shifts so everything is good.

i had a similar issue it was my water tube was improperly seated so it was leaking up top.

Would you guys say it's safe to trade based on what I have explained on the motor in my earlier posts?

I don't think many will search for 'earlier posts'. The motor sounds OK, but you have to be the 'value' judge. I had an '85 140 I bought new ... great motor, kept it over twenty years.

What I meant by earlier posts were the replies I have made in this particular thread. Not another thread. But yeah I think I am going to just trade since it does in fact run and I wouldn't think too much could be causing this. I have actually heard that the pressure from ears tend to do this sometime? I am not sure how true that could be but who knows. I am going to bring it right to my buddy and have him put a new water pump and inspect the lower unit. Anything I should tell him to look for in particular?
