Hey everyone. I'm looking at a boat that's got a 1993 OceanPro 225. Compression is good and I am told by the dealer that the powerhead has been replaced at some point but can't confirm when or where. I had my heart set on a Yami, but the hull is beautiful, and I figure I'm rolling the dice with any 93 outboard. I'm looking for some words of wisdom...is this a reliable motor? Should I be looking for any tell-tale signs? What should I plan on doing to it before I run it?

Hi berg....buying a used outboard is always a roll of the dice but there are things you can do to put the odds in your favor.

First get the engine checked out top to bottom...compression, ignition sytem, fuel system, lower unit. When was the last time the carbs were overhauled. Find out when the water pump was last replaced. If it's been a while, have it replaced.

Is the VRO pump the latest and do ALL the alarms work?

If possible, talk to the previous owner and find out why the block was changed out.

Take a ride in the rig. Make sure it operates as advertised through all throttle settings.

Talk to the dealer about a warranty. Get one in writing and be sure in your mind what it will cover.

And lastly....be sure it's what ya' want.

Keep us posted....thanks.

I've also seen a lot of recommendations to pre-mix the oil, and even adding oil to the tank at 75 or 100:1 with a proper functioning VRO. It seems the VRO is a likely source of trouble. Pre-mix or no pre-mix, any thoughts?
