The other day my boat would start right up,but cutoff at low idle speed. Finally boat took off running 6mph at 2800rpms at full throttle. After about 5 minutes speed increased to 21mph at 5400rpms. Problem did not reoccur the rest of the day. When I returned home I replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs( NGK BR8HS, gap set at.030) and spark plug wires. Carbs were cleaned out 2 weeks ago.I have not run boat since making these repairs. This is a 40hp Evinrude 1993 model on a Suntracker Bass Buggy. This problem occurred the last 2 times I had the boat out. Any ideas what could be happening?

How did the plugs you took out look?<br /> When it increased speed did it do it like you turned on a switch?

Re: 1993 Evinrude 40 HP

I have had a similar problem with an Evinrude 25 hp for a couple of years. I finally got a manual and borrowed an ohm meter and found I have a bad reading on the charge coil. When it heats up it acts fine, but when cool doesn't fire. It's a cheap part but I haven't been able to get the flywheel off! I just put up with the problem for the first 10-15 minutes of operation...does make you wonder when you are heading out into big water though.
