I am new to the forum and need some help and guidence. I am looking at purchasing a 1998 26' Bayliner Rendezvous. It has a 1993 150hp Force. It was a trade in at a local Marina. They are asking $8,500 including the trailer.

Questions:

1.) I am concerened about the reliability and serviceability of the 1993 Force 150hp engine, should I be ?

2.) The boat weighs 4300 lbs, I realize the engine is undersized and at some point I will need to replace the motor. Can I relace it EASILY with
a 200 hp? What would be involved and at what cost? The throttle control is a Quick Silver.

Thanks Very Much For Your Feedback

Even without considering reliability, that's a 14 year old boat and underpowered to boot. And 200 may not be enough either. Hell, I have a 21 footer and I want to go from 140 to 200 myself.

Personally, I would not bother with it. If you are really interested in it, first look in TheSaltyDog.com, Craigs list, and Boat shopper to see what similar rigs are going for. It may be correctly priced, but then later you need to repower and in all probability you won't be able to recoup the repower cost when you decide to sell it for whatever reason.

My personal feeling is that you could probably find something more adequately powered for that price.

If you still really like it, make a real lowball offer like --5,000, cash right now--. or even less if you have the chutspah. You never can tell what will happen. Remember: you will never pay less than your original offer. Over here, it's winter and there's plenty of wiggle room. Remember: used boats have not yet gone the way of autos--no haggle price. Just don't be embarassed, and if the dealer starts to yell or get agressive with you, just walk away and don't deal with him.

But first, do your homework and see what price other boats are listed at.

Thank You Frank, I have checked the NADA boat pricing for this set up. Average retail is $7,300 with the trailor. The owner of the Marina say's he won't go less that thier asking price of $8,500 due to the fact that in his opinon the boat is in above average condition. But he has not even gone over the boat yet because they took it in late fall. I'm planing on going to look at it next weekend. He is getting it out of storage to check it out. He claims that he will not sell it any less than what he is asking because he feels that he will easily sell it in the spring. I am planing on asking him to do a compression test, and if that checks out than I thought I would try to negoiate a lower price and/or ask for the engine to be analyzed and any neccessary repairs made. But, I am still not sure about it due to the underpower of the 150hp. If down the road I need to put a larger hp rebuilt motor on it, by cost basis will be upwards of $17 -18K. The question becomes can I get a 26' deck boat with a rebuilt 200hp for $18K ?

I think an interesting question that you should definetly ask the dealer is why is the motor 5 years older than the hull. Did the previous owner abuse the boat and kill the motor that came with it? If thats the case then the previous owner may have beat on the motor thats on there now too. Try and get some background to the history to the boat. Always remember that the motor is one of the most important things, if not the most important thing, to evaluate when buying a used boat. Make sure you really feel comfortable with that motor if you're gonna spend that kind of money. As nice as that boat may be, it is not very useful without the motor.

A boat that size, I'd say you need twin 150's on it!
