I'm looking to purchase this boat, but I do not know anything about the 5.0 Cobra engine or if the 1993 Four Winns are good dependable boats. The boat appears to be in very good condition for a 1993, but I'm also concerned about the cost of repairs or maintenance on the boat. If anyone can give me any help or ideas it would be appreciated. Here is the craigslist link

Re: 1993 Four Winns 190 Horizon with 5.0 Cobra

I'm very happy with my 1992 Four Winns with a 5.8L Cobra but here are some things for you to consider:

1) For any boat more than about 10 years old, the condition and maintenance of the boat is more important than the initial build quality. A "cheap" brand boat that has been well maintained for 10 years is likely better than a top-brand boat that's been left out in the rain year-round.

2) Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) manufactured the Cobra drives but they went out of business in the late 90s. It can be hard to find parts for the drives and harder to find a mechanic who will both work on them and knows how to. If you're not willing to learn how to service and repair it yourself I suggest you find a qualified mechanic BEFORE you buy the boat. You should have a mechanic go over the boat before purchase anyway.

That said, I am happy with my Four Winns and Cobra drive. The drive is dependable if maintained properly. I'd say it's as good as a Mercruiser or Volvo Penta.
