Ok, I have another newbie question here, but I am new to outboards, and the whole boating world all together. I have a 1993 Johnson Fast Strike 150hp model number J150GLETR. I was wondering what maintenance I should do to this motor as I just bought it. I changed the spark plugs. I need to know what else I should check or change prior to putting this boat in service. It seems to fire up and run fine on land, with the muffs, I havent had it in the water yet. The previous owner didnt make it seem like he let it go to hell. I just want to check everything I can before I run it on the river and have some fun.

See if you can find out from the previous owner when the waterpump and T/stats were last serviced.Otherwise I recommend installing a new pump and T/stats.I'd also insure that the vro is in good working order if it hasn't been disabled.Depending on how long the engine has set out of use,it is recommended on ones that have set out for an extended period to mix 50:1 in fuel tank with TCW3 oil until you can verify oil usage from the vro oil reservoir. You can do this by placing a mark at the oil level on the outside of the reservoir and noting usage after expending several gallons of fuel mix.Once verified, you can run stright gasoline in the fuel tank.Wouldn't want to see your first outing turn disasterous.

And make darn sure you run Champion plugs only.

Ok thanks, I think the waterpump is ok, when I run it on the muffs It shoots water out the tell tale about 15 feet behind the boat. Are those difficult jobs that I should take it somewhere to have done, or is it something I can do. I am familiar with car engines and working on them, but this is a whole nother animal and I didnt want to try it if it isnt something I can tackle.
