Have a 1993 V6 175 Fast Strike. A couple months ago the battery died on water and barely got it started. Thanks to everyone's help, we diagnosed a dead rectifier. Replaced the recifier and everything started working great again (tach, battery charging, etc.). Well the other day the tach quit working again, and when I checked the batteries noticed they are not getting charged anymore either:/ I figuer the rectifier could be the culprit again:%, but what could have caused it to go out so quickly? Figure there was something not addressed that made the other one go out too. No maintenace has been done short of a Champion plug replacement a couple of weekes ago. Also, is anything hurt by running the motor witg the rectifier out? I can keep the batteries charged for fishing trips until I figure out what is causing the recitifier to go out. Can't afford to replace a $175 rectifier every couple months:^ Thx again for everyone's help...

**I apologize this is a duplicate post. I posted this a couple days ago, but have been unable to find it.**

What causes these rectifiers to go out are loose or corroded battery cable connections on the batteries, on the battery switch, or on the motor (including the ground on the motor). All battery cable (and all rectifier) connnections need to be tight and clean. Another cause is hooking the battery cables up backwards but this doesn't seem to be your situation. I dont think anything would be damaged by running the motor with a dead rectifier.

Re: 1993 JOHNSON 175 FAST STRIKE

Lorin thank you for the reply. I will double check that all the battery cables (both on the battery and the motor side) are clean and tight. I think I am good there though. I guess it is entirely possible that the rectifier just went out, It will just get expensive replacing them every couple months. If something else is causing it to go out, I want to address that issue furst. I was wanting to make sure I wasn't endangering anything else by running the motor without the rectifier, because I was wanting to run some fishing trips in the mean time.8)

Any additional suggestions on things to look for are appreciated..

You haven't switched the battery switch with the motor running have you? That can also damage the rectifier/regulator.

Re: 1993 JOHNSON 175 FAST STRIKE

Seasport,
Thnx for the response. There is no battery switch in the mix. I have two deep cycle batteries on the trolling motor, and one cranking battery in the motor. Nothing has been done with the batteries since the last rectifier was changed. I guess I will just have to chaulk it up to a fluke that two rectifier's went out in less than 4 mos. time? I think I will wait out a little longer to see if I can find any other explanations..

How many batteries are connected to the outboard?

Sorry for replying lately been having internet probs:devil:

Dhadley you get around.. I have seen you on 3 other forums I frequent..lol

Only running 1 battery to the motor and two on the trolling motor. They have been ran it a couple times since the rectifier went out because we were told it wouldn't hurt anything, just have had to make sure the battery was fully charged. Will be replacing the rectifier again soon, just thought it was odd it went out again so quickly. I will get expensive replacing $200 rectifier's every couple months:^ Trying to see if it was just a fluke deal or if there is something else causing it. Thx fro the replies!

So the 2 trolling motor batteries are not hooked to the outboard in any way, right?

Re: 1993 JOHNSON 175 FAST STRIKE

Dhadley,
Thx for the response. No, they are not hooked up to the motor. They are deep cycle batteries hooked up only to the trolling motor and an on-board charger. Have one new cranking battery on the motor that was replaced with the last rectifier a couple months ago. I guess it is possible I just got a bad apple, just want to look over all possibilities before I replace that sucker again :) Thx again for any advice you may have.

Regards,
Houston

How do you check the oil on the tilt and trim on a 1993 johnson fast strike? The motor will run both up and down but the engine will not move. thanks for any help.
