Re: 1993 johnson 175 v6 acts like it has rev limiter set at 3000 rpm

This is what I would check and in this order:
1. Is it a VRO? If so, check the oil levels in the main tank and any other holding tanks along the way. If there is a problem in the oil delivery to inline tanks (under the coulling) the computer will set the RPM levels lower and lower to prevent burning the engine when it runs out. I experienced this once before and it was because the sending pump in the main tank went out. When the remote tank fell below the acceptable level, I had the exact issue you are having. It cranks, idles and revs at idle right? Put it in gear an then you only have half power.
2. stator, I'm not familiar with that engine but I do know that several Johson models have two stage stators.
3. My yammys have a highspeed coil that have caused similar problems for me in the past. Does your Johnson have a similar design? If so, check it!
4. Fuel pressure
5. Air mixture

Again, I'm not an expert but over the last 25 years I have had issues with all of these things on several brands of motors and this is where I would start if I were you.

okay disregard i know what vro is its where you dont mix your gas i do mix my gas i mix at a 1:100 ratio one quart of quicksilver to 10 gallons of gas but i think the engine may have vro its just not hooked up how would i know if it does have vro or not??

It should be marked on the motor cover in plane sight most times. If you have to premix the oil, you don't have a VRO. Are you sure 100:1 is correct? I assumed it would be 50:1 as are most motors. However, I'm not to familiar with that year model. Check the owners manual to be sure.

Stator is kinda like your alternator and distributer rolled into one part. It is located under the fly wheel and is a round coil of wire about 10 inches in diameter. It will be bound in a metal or plastic housing which causes it to be square usually. It kinda looks like a big dougnut in most cases. Check this out for a pic http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=stator+pic&qpvt=stator+pic&FORM=IGRE. If you don't have a SELCO or other repair manual, get one. The stator is not a real easy job. You may want to have someone do it for you if your not a decent mech. I'd probably have someone do it for me.

Sounds to me like you are overoiling the engine since 1 quart to 12 gallons will give the 50:1 ratio that's called for you are actually mixing at 40:1 Ratio. Are your plugs fouling out?

The only sensor that will limit the RPMs to about 3000 is the overheat sensor.
Oil ratio is 50:1 if you premix.
Stator is 1 stage for the ignition. 1 stage from power coil for pack logic.

Time for a manual.

okay so yall are telling me to mix is 50:1 and the back of my quick silver bottle says that if i mix it 50:1 then i need to mix 26 ounces to 10 gallons of gas so that cant be right can it

okay i was under the assumption that my quick silver bottle was one quart but it measures in ounces so ive been putting 14 ounces to 10 gallons of gas which is just over a 100:1 ratio

A perfect example of why people should keep their VRO in working condition. You are not the first messing up the pre-mix.

im sorry haffiman i thought i was asking for help getting my boat running correctly not asking for a smartass so unless you have some input that will help answer my question please do me a favor and stay off my post and btw my boat doesnt have a VRO therefore i have to premix

No matter what the ratio mix is sounds like yuou may have some cylinders not sparking while under load if the plugs are not fouling out; get a timing light and while someone is driving the boat check each plug wire to see if you are getting a spark on each one. New power packs can go out and it would'nt be the first time. Good luck. The posters on this forum sre just rying to help.

Re: 1993 johnson 175 v6 acts like it has rev limiter set at 3000 rpm

okay so in a post earlier clanton said that the over heat sensor would limit my rpm it just so happens my boat is sounding one long horn when the key is turned on and when the motor is running but i know my boat isnt overheating its been sitting all night first startup the horn automatically comes on so if its doing this it leads me to believe the sensor is bad and if so does anyone know where this sensor is??

Each cylinder head has an overheat sensor. Each will send a signal to the powerpack to kill spark to 3 cylinders, if the motor is overheating. They also send a signal to the warning horn. The signal is a grounding of the overheat sensor. I recommend you check them out.

Bigboi...you have gotten a bunch of hooey responses on this thread. Believe it.

First, you have a VRO (OMS) fuel pump. Period. It might be disconected from the oil tank, and set up to run premix. But it is still a VRO pump. Time to check and absolutely verify if it is indeed disabled from oil injecting or not. The life of your motor is at risk.

Second, time to learn some math and begin mixing your oil/fuel correctly. Six gals of gas and one pint of oil is a 50:1 mix.
Fifty gals of gas and one gal of oil is a 50:1 mix.
Figure it out. You are a bigboi.

Thirdly, the engine has a SLOW mode (explained in the manual) that limits the RPM in the event of an overheat. Sorta like what the engine is telling you with the horn.

Fourthly, Clanton recommended a manual. Take his recommendation.

Fifth...Haffiman is someone you want on your side.

Now, I will take my smartass self off this thread.

Look for tan wires on the engine. Disconnect all tan wires, Key on engine off, if horn still sounds contuinous, horn is bad. the 2 heat sensors are at the top of the cylinder head, port side has 2 wires. the second wire is for Quick Start black and white wire. Fuel pump has 1 sensor for oil being pumped, oil tank has sensor for oil level,
