Hello,
I have a 1993 Johnson faststrike silver star series. this engine dies and no restart for no aparent reason. went to lake on saturday started it had rough idle took off got on plane and for no aparent reason engine died like shutting off key. tried to restart with no luck. trolled to dock trying to restart several times once to dock it started with a touch of the key. took it back to my shop checked carbs reeds replaced fuel line and cleaned fuel filter. found trash in fuel and leak at top of fuel pump. took it back to lake on sunday started right away was idling from dock and it quit again would not restart trolled to fishing spot trying to restart several times with no luck then all of a sudden it started I shut it off and restarted it with no problem. when I got ready to start to go back to dock it wouldnt start. I tried several times with no luck so we loaded it up and brought it back figured I would try it one more time at shop just touched the key and it started. I cant figure out the problem. Can anyone help me?

Maybe your killswitch is shorting out. Easy to check, clean and eliminate a possible cause. Post results and if it is something else these guys here will help you out. Good luck

I have checked kill swich. checked all connections at powerhead, replaced sparkplugs with ql77jc4 with .030 gap. compression on all cylinders are from 100 to 105. this engine had 3 l77jc4 and 3 ql77jc4 when I pulled them out and they were gaped from .040 to .050. and it ran better then than now. It had an intermident skip at high rpm then but always started. I could trip it out and pull back on throttle and it ran good. Seems I made the matter worse when I installed these plugs but not sure I dont have another problem all together cant figure why changing the plugs would make it act this way.

since you've been thru the fuel system, are you getting spark when it's acting up. could be the power packs getting warm and failing. had one that would start run a while, just quit, and wouldn't restart, cool down, and it would go a while more. and just quit.

Its tough when you can't duplicate the problem in the shop. All I can suggest is take her out again and when she dies and won't re-start do a spark test to rule out ignition. Take a jumper wire with you and if she won't restart unplug the big cannon plug in the wire harness in the engine and jump from the positive (big red) wire on the solenoid to the small yellow wire on the solenoid. If she starts now your problem is in the wiring forward of the motor , the key switch, or the safety switch .Before you go though, clean every ground connection you can find on the motor.

thanks for all your help
I did get it to do this one time in the shop on the hose. it was running I cut it off and restarted several times. seemed to be ok turned the water off went around hit the key and nothing. checked kill switch it checked ok cranked over again and nothing. turned water back on and went to crank again and seemed as long as cranking it was getting no fire but when I turned the key loose it fired. like the started is drawing the fire but I tried this on the water with no help. I will see if I can get it to do this on the hose again and try your sugestions.
Thanks,
Robby

Walker,
Im not sure I am using this site correctly to reply to messages so bear with me. Could you explain how to do the spark test and is the yellow wire you speak of the one with the red stripe on it?
Thanks
