I sold my buddy my old boat and he hasn't taken good care of it at all.
Four years-no lower unit servicing, same plugs, etc.

I may want it back since it was so easy to maintain. But I might not.

Problem-- There is a large cast retainer type ring directlly in front of the propeller. It has shattered. The two bolts are broken off at the lower unit and all that is left is a cracked ring that has slid backward onto the prop. Did these bolts just decay and this ring broke when it slid back or is there something greater going on here that caused the ring to crack the bolts?

The part almost seems sacrificial since my johnson doesnt have one.

If I can put another on and be worry free, I will consider giving the $1150 asking. The prop shaft feels solid to the shake.
If the lower is throwing a fit, I won't.

He still is in possesion of the manual so I'm not sure what this part is called. Thanks

You mentionned a ring attached by 2 bolts: did you mean #54. If so, it's the bearing carrier assembly, wich hold 2 roller bearings and 2 seals for the prop shaft.

In this case, you'll need at least the carrier (150$) and a L/U seal kit (60$). And this is if water haven't get into the housing and made some damages.

Well I can't quite see the numbers clearly but the part I mention is shown in the blown up view in the bottom left corner- the left part with larger diameter. It is a cast ring that has a bolt on top and another on bottom. It's pretty much destroyed. I got one boat that runs right now and I'm concerned that he may have let the maintenance go too far on this one for me to get it back to where it was b4 I sold it to him. Thanks alot for you help

Thanks for making it bigger

Whoa!!!! is 54 one big part???? Ouch he really screwed it up this time!
I thought it was just the ring part at the rear since that is what has detatched.

Yeah, one piece. Seems that he manage to split it...

The rearmost side of this part (that you described as a ring and is now detached) is where the prop shaft seals sits.

The cracks start where the bolts eventually broke. Apparently, the guts pushed the assembly backwards cause the bolt on areas where still almost touching the lower at an angle. Sounds like it could be a can of worms in there.
I'll let him know one more time about the importance of preventative matenance. Thanks alot saumon

No problems; if you choose to go ahead, the first thing you have to do is checking the gear oil. If it sat for some time, you'll see it right away if there's water in there cause it will be the first thing to drip.

For some peoples, It is NOT important. They prefer to buy another cheap boat from a friend until it broke, and so on! ;)
