1993 Mercury 200 Offshore motor Tilting on its own, wet switch.

i was out today an it was a little rough and was getting some spray. the motor tilted up all by itself . the tilt/trim switch on the cowling got wet and made connection(i guess) and tilted the motor up when i was running slow in rough seas. Is this a sealed switch? is it just old n not sealed anymore? can i seal/fix it? it works well when dry. is this a common problem? i had to unhook it to make it back in.
