Hi Everyone,

My mother is up at our cottage, sounds like we have a trim/tilt issue with our motor. I'm hoping to attach this video. I asked her to look for oil slicks on the water, looking for a bad trim cylinder, but doesn't sound like that is the issue. Does this appear to be more the trim motor itself? If so, can I replace it while its in the water? (near shore). Our trailer isn't near us, its in storage.

Since its a 1993, I wouldn't be surprised if the trim motor finally went bad.

Please ignore the 2nd link as I can't remove it, you need to see the link that ends with .mov

Thanks!

The trim motor sounds OK. I would run it all the way up, and let her sit 3 minutes. Now fill the reservoir with a Dextron II auto trans fluid. Also grease the zercs on the tilt tube. Now run her down and up. Let her sit 3 minutes and refill the PTT reservoir. Repeat a few times until she trims smooth.

Obviously, there is no need to run the motor while filling the trim reservoir.

The trim motor probably can't be replaced with the boat in the water, because you will likely need to remove one side of the transom bracket, and the transom bolt holes or the PTT unit itself could be under water.

Thanks so much Chris! Seems better now after a new battery, but still slightly jerky when almost down. Seems ok going up, although does a bit weaker than before. Is it possible the trim motor is going bad, since it is a 1993 (and sits in the water from Memorial Day - Labor Day).

I will definitely fill the reservoir when I go back, as that sounds like a good solution too. Hopefully I'll get it squared away! How much would a new trim motor cost roughly? Didn't catch my serial number on the pontoon. For sure a 1992 or 1993 Mercury Black Max 135.

I had to replace the PTT trim motor on my '93 135HPV6 in less than 10 years, after I bought it, so if you have the original, you are doing well. Aftermarket PTT motors are avail for $250 or so. You need the Sierra 18-6774 or equivalent, if I remember correctly.

Thanks Chris! Do you think the sign of a failing trim motor are the indications I gave? Although its better than in the video now, still a bit jerky near when you get past 1/2 down trim. I wasn't sure if these motors just suddenly "fail" altogether, or they have sign of a imminent failure as indicated.
