1993 OMC Cobra 5.0 l EFI Tilt Ram Refilling...

I am refilling an almost empty tilt & trim system on a 1993 OMC Cobra 5.0 l EFi outdrive. The whole system was off the boat during a transom rebuild. The manual says to take off the cap ends of the rams and fill the low volume chambers. Is there another way? Can I fill the reservoir and pump the fluid in? Also, should I be able to pull/move the trim rods at all by hand? I don't want to damage anything, but I need to extend them a little to get the pivot rod in... Thanks, I am almost done...

I see where I typed something wrong... I meant trim rams instead of trim rods... Thanks!

Before taking it apart i would try just filling it at the fill cap.It is a self purging system so run it up and down several times and recheck level until all the air is out..
I had the one on my 87 cobra apart like that and it worked for mine..
