I just bought a 93 Striper 19' with Evinrude 150 Spitfire. The engine has good power and the boat gets on a plane quickly. The engine has 157 hours and I think it has the VRO system. Is this a good engine? What preventative maintenance should I perform and can anyone recommend a good repair manual?

Drain ,inspect ,and change oil in lower unit.Change fuel filter. If it has Vro you shoul have a remote oil tank in boat somewhere. Can't comment any further on fuel and oil mix until you can verify whether vro system is connected or has been bypassed.Scroll to bottom of this page for a manual.
Where the fuel line goes through front motor pan there should be an oil hose just below that also goes through.remove motor cover and see if oil line is connected to Vro pump.
Locate tan wire at top rear of engine that leads from temp sensor to alarm box. With key in on position ground this wire to insure overtemp alarm is working.

After you recieve your manual , if you don't have any record of when the waterpump was last serviced I would recommend installing new waterpump kit.

Thanks for the reply OB. I do have a remote oil tank, it has a line that goes into the engine. Which manual is best the one by Seloc or Clymer? This is probably in the manual, but what lower unit oil (brand, weight etc...) would you recommend?

I personally use OMC hi-vis in my evinrude gearcase, however there are some other major oil company brands that are adequate. As for the manual I can't speak as to which one will have more useful info for your particular motor. Many members here will recommend the factory manual that sells at a higher costs yet has more detailed info on specific motors. The one you get will rely also on the extent of service you will be performing.Someone will post as to which manual they use from experience and provide you with a link to obtain a factory manual if you so choose.

I have kind of a general question about 2-stroke engine longevity. How many hours can I expect to get before needing a rebuild, like a new power head? This is assuming that fuel oil mixture has been maintained etc... I don’t know much about 2 strokes I have only worked on 4 strokes.
