I just picked up a 1993 Crestliner with a Volvo 230b and SP drive. The first time I took it out it seemed to run to hot when cruising on a plane. Now I realize the normal range is roughly 180 to 200F but it was getting up to around 220 or so. It still ran fine other than the guage saying it was getting hot. When I would slow back down the temp would come down too. Should this be an immediate cause for concern, a common thing or a simple fix? The previous owner said the raw water pump was replaced this spring. I did not verify this.

The 230b can have a LOT of things go wrong with the cooling.
Start with the impeller or pump itself.(grooves in the pump/ cover)
The raw water system on the drive.
It might be sucking air on plane?(back flush)
Then the heat exchanger might be clogged?(back flush)(possibly acid dip)
Or the manifold's(how old?) clogged.(replace)

I would check the intake hose fitting just below the ujoint bellows Pull the hose off the fitting and examine the fitting for corrosion. its and easy check.

So just wanted to post an update. I removed the heat exchanger and cleaned it with aluminum wheel acid and got very little crud out of it and it looked fairly clean. Replaced the raw water pump impeller which wasn't in real great shape and also replaced the gasket on the fitting on the out drive. There was a little corrosion there. I finally had it out this weekend for the first time and I seem to have fixed that problem. Thanks for all the help!
