1993 VRO external oil tank holes

I am the original owner of a 1993 Lund with a 90hp Johnson. I could never understand why oil would be leaking around the reserve oil tank until yesterday when I decided to take some things apart and find out why. As I peeled the black cover back there it was. There are at least 5 factory holes in the top of the tank. Now I assume they are for venting but 5 holes? So now I guess I have been over filling the tank causing the leaks out those holes and onto the bottom of the boat. Are those holes really designed to be vents.

I don't remember seeing holes in the oil tank that came with my 1988 70hp Evinrude. Though the newer version may be different.

Should not be any open holes. Perhaps they held something in place at one time? Are they threaded?

I did some further research. It appears this tank could also be used with a return line and it would attach to those holes in the top of the tank. You can actually see the knockout as a circle in the black cover. My application does not use a return line and the holes in the top of the tank have been left open. I assume I could run some small screws into those holes and keep the oil contained in the tank. Would that be OK? Pictures below will help to clarify.

Those holes may have been put in there if you wanted an oil level gauge. Just block them up as the tank is vented through the cap.

Yes I will run some small self tapping screws in each hole and it will be good. Thanks everyone for responding.
