I changed the water impeller not too long ago, And i've been struggling with neutral and reverse. But I have plenty of forward. From what I have read , i'm might be a little off with the lower unit. If I could get some help and confirmation on how to adjust this, id be very thankful. And what are the steps in doing so. I do believe it's the front silver rod. Snapchat-1017725812.jpg

Can you adjust the lower unit Where the rod connects to the top, Or do you have to
drop the lower unit to make the adjustments.

Was the reverse working before you change water impeller? If yes, you may have unscrewed the lower shift rod. You don't have to drop the LU unit yet. Instead, disconnect the lower shift rod from the upper shift rod. Now try to fully screw in the lower shift rod clockwise direction looking from the top. It screws in to the shift coupler located inside the LU gear box.

Next using the top of the LU unit where the lower shift rod protrudes as your reference, push down on the lower shift rod and the gear should engage (Forward). Check this by turning on the prop and should not turn. Mark the shift rod position with reference to the top of the hole with a red line or black marker.

Next pull up the lower shift rod all the way, again the gear will be engaged (Reverse). Check the prop by turning it and it should not turn. Mark the shift rod like before (a different color marker is preferred).

You now have the two max points of the lower shift rod, which are the forward and reverse. To find the neutral position, it should be half way between these two marks. Mark it with a different color marker. Test the neutral position by pushing the shift rod down half way between the two initial marks. Check the prop and it should be free wheeling.

Now you have all three marks, reconnect the lower shift rod to the upper shift rod. Shift the control handle to reverse and check if the lower shift rods is aligned with the neutral marking and prop is engaged and not moving. If not then adjust as necessary. There's an adjustment just below the carbs. Try following the shift cable mechanism and you should find it just below the carbs. Do the same with the forward position.

As Jiggz says and follow his instruction.
If you have the two piece drive shaft dual exhaust LU, you have to check the setting of the lower shift shaft.
The position of it due to the OEM workshop manual you should thread it down (CW) until it bottom out then turn it back four turns.

Thank you, as far I know it did, I talked to the guy I bought it from and he said the reverse worked just fine. I am going through your steps and I got it to neutral, after screwing it clockwise down until it got tight and backed it off to line up the holes for the pin but it's about topped out. When I was adjusting the rod up-and-down.I couldn't find a neutral. So I started the engine and
I played with the throttle, it was sitting halfway between N and R. To get it to neutral. With the rod all the way up, shouldn't it be close to going into reverse?

Okay, thank you, I did back it off a bit after bottoming out

So do you have Reverse and Forward now? If not and if the neutral position is between the N and R, then you need to screw in the lower shift rod more. Try screwing in the lower shift rod all the way in or until it bottoms out and then test again. The reason I recommend this is because the guy before you may have made adjustment with the rod with it bottomed out. If bottoming out place the neutral between the F and R then just unscrew it one turn at a time until it's neutral is midpoint between F and R and you actually have reverse and forward. The neutral position is presumptive to be mid point but not always necessary depending on the adjustment made before and also with the control cable. The goal is for you to have R and F and that neutral is actually where the control handle is at.
