Other than the intermitting miss that is driving me crazy..Any tips out there for more reliability?
I rebuilt the engine 150 hrs. ago after the top crankshaft bearing failed. I did eliminate the VRO system. I run the oil ratio a little "fat" and keep the water pump changed. With the cost of a new engine, I hope to get as many hours as possible out of this one.I know this year was one of the ones that started OMC"s quality decline. What is the deal on block "venting"??
Thanks

Now is the time to learn how to use the red search at the top of the page. Go there - enter block venting and take your pick.

that intermitting is comming fom your power pack if you mark each cylinder tdc and put that cylinder# on your flywheel across from the timming pointer connect timming light to each plug wire while running at idle you should see each cylinder number you connect the timming gun to if you see another cylinder # its firing bad or if you see tha cylinder# on the other side replace the power pack and your good 770 715 9738 juan

Regarding the top bearing failure....
One thing I check yearly is the recirc line that runs from the bottom of the crankcase to the top of the crankcase. It has a small check valve in it, located down near the bottom fitting.
I pull the hose off at the top fitting, because it is easy ro get to, attach a short piece of scrap line, and blow, then suck thru that line to verify that the check valve is not clogged. A clogged sixteen dollar check valve will destroy the top bearing. Also, if you pull the line at the top fitting, and start the engine, the line will pulse fuel/oil out. Likewise, when running, if you touch the opening of the top fitting, you should feel pulses of pressure.

For longevity I'd reconnecct the oil injection system since you have the OMS pump (a 94 V6 looper never came with the old VRO pump). Your pump has some really good alarms that are great to have.

Use only Champion plugs, good oil, fresh 87 octane and set it up for around 6000 rpm at wot with your normal load. You'll probably get a bit less if you use ethanol.

Sometimes we see upper bearing damage because the top bearing slips down out of the housing. There are at least 4 molds for the upper housing and one of them is pretty loose. Anytime we rebuild one of those motors we stake the housing to make sure the bearing stays put.

Venting the block makes sure the block stays full of water and will not let the water cooled reg/rec over heat.
